Raise voices. Rattle cages. Do good.

The Make America Great Again movement has become one of the most powerful forces in modern American politics. Its leader, Donald Trump, is embraced by many evangelical Christians who believe he champions their values. Yet, when viewed through the lens of the Bible—not partisan politics—the MAGA movement stands in stark contrast to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In truth, MAGA’s core values of nationalism, wealth-worship, pride, and exclusion are not merely un-Christian—they are anti-Christian.

Idolatry and the Golden Goat

One of the clearest examples of this spiritual contradiction is the golden goat statue on display at Mar-a-Lago, wrapped in $100 bills and bearing Trump’s face. While some may see it as symbolic or humorous, its theological implications are unmistakable. It echoes the story of the golden calf in Exodus:

“He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf… Then they said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’ …They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol.”
Exodus 32:4–8

The worship of Trump, his image, his wealth, and his power, mirrors the sin of idolatry. Christians are called to worship God alone, not political leaders. The very existence of this statue is a brazen violation of the First Commandment:

“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything…”
Exodus 20:3–4

To elevate a political figure to a divine status, whether literally or symbolically, is a direct affront to God’s authority.

Wealth and Greed as Virtues

Donald Trump is often praised in MAGA circles for his business success and displays of wealth. But Jesus repeatedly condemned the worship of money. In the Book of Matthew, Christ said:

“You cannot serve both God and money.”
Matthew 6:24

And in the Book of Luke, he warned:

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
Luke 12:15

Yet the MAGA movement frequently holds up financial success as proof of moral superiority or divine blessing. Lavish rallies, gold-plated aesthetics, and prosperity gospel-style rhetoric have become hallmarks of a movement more concerned with economic dominance than spiritual humility.

Pride, Lies, and Self-Exaltation

Trump’s public persona, boastful, combative, and rarely penitent, stands in opposition to biblical humility. The Bible teaches:

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
James 4:6

Jesus, by contrast, modeled meekness and servant leadership. He washed the feet of his disciples and warned against self-glorification:

“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Luke 14:11

MAGA’s culture of aggression and triumphalism is not the humility of Christ, it is the arrogance of Caesar.

Hatred of the Stranger and the Poor

One of the most jarring aspects of MAGA politics is its hostility toward immigrants, refugees, and the poor, those Jesus commanded his followers to care for most. Policies that separated families at the border, demonized entire nations, and ridiculed the vulnerable contradict the Gospel.

“For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in…”
Matthew 25:42–43

And again:

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”
Matthew 25:45

Any movement that mocks the weak or scapegoats the foreigner does not follow Christ. It follows the path of empire and cruelty.

False Prophets and Political Deception

The MAGA movement has also seen the rise of religious leaders who claim divine favor for Trump, often twisting Scripture to support their ideology. But Jesus warned us:

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
Matthew 7:15

And Paul wrote in Corinthians

“Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
2 Corinthians 11:14

Christianity is not about aligning with earthly power. It is about truth, humility, and justice.

A Call to Repentance

It is not enough for Christians to wear crosses and attend rallies. We must examine whether we are truly following the way of Christ, or following a political idol. The MAGA movement, in both its spirit and its symbols, has elevated nationalism over the Gospel, personal power over divine truth, and vengeance over grace.

Christians must reclaim their faith, not by clinging to golden goats or political strongmen, but by returning to the words of Jesus:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”
Matthew 5:9

“My kingdom is not of this world.”
John 18:36

Let us not trade the eternal truth of the Gospel for a slogan on a red hat. Let us repent of idolatry, greed, and hatred, and remember that greatness in God’s eyes is found not in dominating others, but in loving them.
