Ben Affleck is back as Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2, and this time around, things are a little less broody and a lot more fun. Director Gavin O’Connor shifts the vibe from gritty drama to action-comedy, and it works, especially when Christian teams up with his long-lost brother Braxton, played with a perfect mix of chaos and charm by Jon Bernthal.
The story kicks off when Christian gets pulled back into the criminal world after a government official turns up dead under shady circumstances. From there, it’s a wild ride through human trafficking rings and a seafood market that’s secretly a smuggling hub (yeah, seriously). The plot gets a little messy and hard to follow at times, but the chemistry between Affleck and Bernthal keeps it grounded and entertaining.
Affleck still handles Christian’s socially awkward, numbers-obsessed character with care, adding layers without slipping into stereotypes. And Bernthal brings just the right amount of emotional depth to Braxton, giving the film some heart to go with its bullets and brawls.
Sure, the movie jumps around a bit, but honestly, that kinda adds to the fun. And everybody seems to agree since it’s scoring higher than the first movie, pulling in 76% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original’s 53%.
Bottom line? The Accountant 2 might not have the tightest plot out there, but it’s got great action, a solid sense of humor, and two leads who are clearly having a blast. It’s a good time for fans of the first film, or anyone looking for an offbeat action flick with brains and brawn.
