In 1981, Reagan signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, which slashed federal mental health funding by more than 25% and shifted responsibility to the states without providing the money to handle it. This followed the earlier deinstitutionalization push, but Reagan finished the job by gutting community mental health centers.
The result? Hundreds of thousands of people with severe mental illness were dumped onto the streets. Modern mass homelessness didn’t appear out of thin air, it exploded under Reagan. That wasn’t Democrats. That wasn’t “woke policy.” That was Republican austerity dressed up as fiscal responsibility.
Then came the war on labor.
Reagan didn’t just weaken unions, he sent a message that corporations could crush them without consequence. When he fired over 11,000 striking members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) in 1981 and banned them for life, it was a starter pistol. Union density collapsed. Wages stagnated. Worker power evaporated. Productivity kept rising, but pay didn’t because Reagan made sure it didn’t.
That’s why your grandfather could support a family on one income and now two full-time jobs won’t cover rent. That wasn’t some mysterious economic force. It was deliberate policy.
And let’s talk about mass incarceration, because MAGA loves pretending crime policy fell out of the sky in 2020.
The modern prison state was built by Republicans under the banner of law and order. Reagan launched the War on Drugs knowing full well it wasn’t about public safety. Jobs didn’t disappear because Americans “got lazy.” They were shipped overseas because Republicans wrote trade deals that prioritized corporate profit over labor. Reagan normalized offshoring. Bush expanded it. Trump talked big and did jack shit to reverse it. Corporations gutted manufacturing towns, extracted every dime, and left behind addiction, despair, and empty storefronts.
Then Republicans blamed immigrants.
They sold out American workers, collapsed entire regions, and pointed the finger at anyone but themselves. And now MAGA wants to look at the wreckage and say, “Look what Democrats did”?
