Raise voices. Rattle cages. Do good.
Raise voices. Rattle cages. Do good.

Some liberals get nervous when they hear about a new right-wing third party. I say pass the fucking popcorn. Because history tells us nothing makes Republicans implode faster than a billionaire with a pet political project.

Let’s take a stroll back to 1992. Texas billionaire Ross Perot, no, not Elon Musk, though they both share an unhealthy obsession with “fixing” America, decided he was tired of both parties and launched his Presidential campaign of fiscal responsibility, freedom, and pie charts on national TV.

Top Three Takeaways from the Article:

Ross Perot’s 1992 and 1996 presidential runs split the Republican vote so severely that Bill Clinton won the presidency twice with less than 50% of the popular vote, flipping traditionally red states like Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, and West Virginia.

A new “America First” party, especially if backed by a wealthy, budget-obsessed Texan, could repeat Perot’s vote-siphoning effect, drawing millions of conservative voters away from the GOP.

Liberals have every strategic reason to back such a movement, as it would all but guarantee Democratic victories in swing states, and potentially even deep-red strongholds, by making Republicans cannibalize their own base.

Perot wasn’t just some protest vote. He was a wrecking ball aimed squarely at George H.W. Bush’s reelection hopes. The man won 19.7 million votes, almost all from Republicans, and got exactly zero electoral votes for his trouble. And who waltzed into the White House with just 43% of the popular vote? None other than “Slick Willy” himself – Bill Clinton.

Fast-forward to 1996. Perot ran again, siphoned off another 9 million Republican votes, and Clinton didn’t just win, he took states Democrats hadn’t touched since disco was king. Louisiana. Arkansas. Kentucky. Tennessee. Missouri. West Virginia.

Thank you, Ross. Seriously.

All that glorious ‘90s economic growth conservatives love to crow about? You can thank the billionaire who split the Republican base like a wishbone. Without Perot, we’d be telling a very different story about the Clinton years, probably one where Newt Gingrich is Vice President, Republicans explode the national debt yet again, and the internet runs on dial-up forever.

So now, when another billionaire Texan obsessed with “fiscal purity” talks about launching the America Party, I’m not worried. I’m excited. Because if there’s one thing more reliable than a Fox News anchor blaming immigrants for the weather, it’s the GOP eating itself alive the moment a shiny new third-party hero shows up.

Who knows, maybe in 2028, Pete Buttigieg takes Oklahoma. And we’ll have the America First Party to thank for the encore performance of the Republican civil war.
